Yağlıdere is a town and district of Giresun Province in the Black Sea region of Turkey.
The district covers an extension of the Giresun Mountains, including part of the valley of the Yağlıdere stream which gives the district its name. When the mountain streams that feed the Yağlıdere are in full flood, they are a threat. This is an agricultural district; the hillsides are planted with hazelnuts, fruit trees, chestnuts and other deciduous trees. Some tea and corn are grown and animals are grazed on the higher slopes.
7,095 people live in the small town of Yağlıdere, which was founded in 1811 with a marketplace and a large mosque.
A large portion of the population has migrated to America, especially New York and New Jersey, causing the town to be nicknamed New Yağlıdere or Little New York.

Foods
Cows are put to butter use elsewhere. The highlands produce dairy products, including some excellent cheeses. "Tecen peyniri" is made with herbs and spices, and adds zest to any breakfast. The best thing that comes from a cow, though, is a type of very dry cheese which is used to make muhlama (kuymak, havits), or cheese fondue.
The top vegetable specialty of the region is dark cabbage which is used in a variety of homey dishes, including "kara lahana dolmasi", "dible" a succulent variation on the standard Turkish dolma.
Black Sea food, for instance, is arguably the best in Turkey and years of geographic isolation have even given the locals unique physical characteristics ... as well as a reputation for being country bumpkins.
Turks will often claim Black Sea fruit to be the best in the world and a sample of a local cherry or apricot might be enough to convince you.
Turkish tea is a strong, smoky black variety that, traditionally served with sugar, is as much a social event and opportunity for human interaction as it is a beverage.

Weather
The coastal regions have much milder winters and here snow is rare. Black Sea coast, is a little colder in winter than the west and south coasts. The Black Sea coast has some rain all the year round and east of Samsun this becomes heavy in the summer and autumn. Summers here are warm and humid and the weather is often changeable and cloudy.
The interior plateau has low rainfall and cold or very cold winters. Towards the east the winter cold is similar to that found in parts of the Russian Federation. Except at higher levels, summers in the interior are warm or even hot with occasional thunderstorms. Winter precipitation here falls mostly as snow and towards the east this may lie on the ground for between three and four months.
