Shibata (新発田市 Shibata-shi) is a city located in Niigata, Japan.
As of 2008, the city has an estimated population of 103,101 and the density of 194 persons per km². The total area is 532.82 km².
The city was founded on January 1, 1947.
The ruins of Shibata castle are the main visitor attraction and provide the backdrop to the spring cherry blossom viewing parties. Also of note is the Shimizuen garden and Ijimino park.
History
- On July 7, 2003 - The town of Toyoura from Kitakanbara District was amagalated into the city of Shibata.
- On May 1, 2005 - The town of Shiunji and the village of Kajikawa from Kitakanbara District were amagalated into the city of Shibata.
