Marivan (in Kurdish: مه ریوان, in Persian: مریوان) is a city in west of Kurdistan Province of Iran. According to the 2006 census, its population is 165,664. [2004-Microsoft Encarta].
The city of Marivan lies close to the border of Iran-Iraq (Iraqi Kurdistan). Lake Zarivar which has a length of 5 km (3.1 mi) and a maximum width of 1.6 km (0.99 mi), lies west of Marivan. The lake's water is sparkingly fresh and has a maximum depth of 5 m. Because of beautiful and preserved nature of Marivan, it has been always one of the most attractive places for tourist both in local and global scales. Because of official border market of Bashmaq which is between Kursish region of Iran and Iraq, Marivan also serves a destination for shopers in neighbor provinces.
The population of Marivan is of Kurdish ethnic group. The language of people in Marivan is also kurdish. Both Sorani and Howrami dialects of Kurdish language are spoken in Marivan.
