Satna (Hindi:सतना) is a city in central India and a municipal corporation in Satna district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is the administrative headquarters of Satna District. Satna is a border city of the state and is touched by the borders of the state of UttarPradesh.

Contents

History

Satna got its name from Sutna or Satna river flowing in its vicinity. It is said that this river got its name from the name of popular rishi called "Suteekshna Muni" of ancient times of Ramayana period (ref. "Satna Nagar" written by Shivanand). A long history is associated with this place. In the Hindu holy book of Ramayana Era Lord Rama stayed in the region of Chitrakoot, half of it is in the outskirts of Satna, shared with Uttar Pradesh, which contains the rest. It was previously a British station, the headquarters of the political agent for Baghelkhand. Political agent office was established in Satna in 1871 but was abolished in 1931. Nearby, at Bharhut, there are the remains of a 2nd century BC Buddhist stupa, first discovered in 1873 by Cunningham. However, most of the excavated remnants were sent to British Museum London by the then British rulers. To know the history of Satna town one may read the following books:

Geography

Satna is located at 24°20′N 80°33′E / 24.34°N 80.55°E / 24.34; 80.55 and it has an average elevation of 315 metres (1033 feet). The place is renowned for Dolomite mines and Limestone. Also, there are seven cement factories in the place which has led to many to migration from many places.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Satna had a population of 225,468. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Satna has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 62%. In Satna, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Language and people

The majority of the people in Satna speak Bagheli, which is a derivative of Hindi. Satna is the 7th most populated city in Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the fastest growing city of Madhya Pradesh. Due to the presence of cement industries, migration of people looking for jobs into the city is very high. People here are usually very friendly and down to earth, willing to help anytime.

There are mainly three theaters in Satna, two of which show latest bollywood movies. There are many restaurants and eateries in the city. There are many tourist spots near Satna. The district of Satna has many natural sceneries and pilgrim sites.

Industries

Jhankar is main theatre in satna, Chandni and Green Talkies show old films. Satna is located in the limestone belts of India. As a result Satna contributes around 8-9% of India's total cement production. The electrical cable industry in Satna is among the pioneers in the country. The city of Satna is also known as commercial capital of Baghelkhand. Due to the abandunce dolomite and limestone in the areas around Satna. The city hosts many good cement producing industries. The city has also lined up may new investments which can create new jobs for the people living in the city. The city is amongst the few most promising cities of Madhya Pradesh because of the several new industries planned by some of the reputed industrial houses in the country. The city has witnessed a sharp growth in the last decade and it is ready to take a quantum leap forward as part of growing India in the face of the new industrialization in this area.

Economy

Satna is the world's largest cement producing district, Industries in Satna include cement manufacturing, hand loom weaving, flour, oilseed milling, and distribution of agricultural and fabric products via road and rail. Asia's biggest cement factory known as "Prism Cement" is in Satna. Another cement clinker plant has been established by JP Bhilai cement limited in Satna in 2009. It is also home to one of the leading cables manufacturer of India, "Universal Cables Limited". Infrastructure development in Satna is booming. Land prices in Satna are one of the highest in the state. Satna is located on an important railway route, therefore it is the goods-transport capital of this region. Most of the trade supplies to the region are unloaded and further supplied to the surrounding regions from here. Trade between Utter Pradesh and Vindhya region occurs mostly through Satna. Currently the economy is growing rapidly in this region of the country. Satna is in the transient stage of its transformation into a big city. As Satna takes the trade hub stature, it has a high rate of migrant coming into the city from other regions looking for work. The population growth creats an increase in demand for goods and services that needs to be fulfilled. Service sectors such as banking is growing rapidly in Satna. Commercial and trade activity, demand for consumer goods (brands name items) are registering impressive growth in Satna.

Transport

Air

Satna has its own smaller airport called Satna Airport. The nearest airport to Satna is jabalpur Airport which is approximately 220 kilometres from the city. The d connects the city to jabalpur Airport. The source of public transportation for people in Satna is rickshaw and auto rickshaws.

Railways

Satna Junction railway station (IRCTC code STA) is a prominent station in Madhya-northern railway division on the route between Jabalpur Junction and Allahabad. It is a junction and the branch goes to Rewa from here. The railway station has three platforms with all up going trains (trains in the direction of Mumbai) normally using platform number 1 and all down going (trains in direction of Allahabad-Manikpur) using platforms 2 and 3. The railway station is very important because of its proximity to the ancient city of Khajuraho. Satna is well connected by train to almost all major cities of the countries. It lies on the busy train route connecting Mumbai and Howrah. There is also a diesel depot for the Western Central Railway.

Excellent bus service is available from Satna to various cities of Madhya pradesh and to some cities of Maharashtra. Luxury buses are available for smaller cities too, Sleeper buses are available for Indore, Bhopal, Nagpur and Jabalpur. A couple of state highways and a national highway make the city well connected by roads. Satna is connected to the longest National Highway: NH-7. State highway NH-75 passes from the heart of Satna and connects it to cities of Panna and Rewa which are other important cities of northern Madhya Pradesh.

Education

Satna has a literacy rate of 90.89%. India's first rural university in chitrakoot was established in 1993 Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramoday University. It is 1 of 16 state government university in Madhya Pradesh. There are several degree colleges with large campuses in Satna. The Awdhesh Pratap Singh University is also located in Satna. The city is an educational hub of Vindhya region and several courses like Biotechnology, Computer, Management, Journalism etc. are offered by various institutes located here. Polytechnic college is also one of the oldest technical college in vindhya region. Polytechnic college has a special branch Cement Technology which is only in this college in india.

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya run by HRD Ministry of India is a leading center of education in Satna. Located at Rahikwara, this school has produced many talented engineers, journalists and lawyers.

Tourism

Satna district has some major religious tourism spots including, Chitrakoot and Maihar. Satna district is also proud to be close to an ancient city of Buddhist culture named 'Bharhut', whose archaeological remains are displayed in many museums in India and all over the world. Tulsi museum at Ramvan, 16 km away from the city, has many unique artistic sculptures of ancient times found in this area. Lord Shiva temple at Birsinghpur is a famous and old temple in the region, worth visiting. Madhavgarh fort about 7 km away from satna Railway station (Rewa Road) is another place to visit around Satna.

Satna is the nearest Indian rail-way station for world famous temples of Khajuraho and that is why many international tourists can be spotted here year round. Tourists normally hire taxis from the railway station with the help of MP tourism office to go to Khajuraho and come back.

Temples

Satna is famous for its scenic temples. One of those temples, named "Venktesh Mandir", is situated near Mukhtyarganj. It was constructed between 1876 - 1925 by the royal family of Deorajnagar. Dali Baba is a very ancient place of worship in Satna. It is said to be established in 1857 by Abdaldas Baba. A Jain temple was constructed in 1880 and Pranami Mandir in 1890. A new temple named "Pashupati Nath" has been also built recently on the outskirts of Satna. There are temples of Saibaba, located at Dhawari and Sindhi colony where hundreds of people gather every Thursday for worship. One more famous temple is "Shiv temple" on the bank of Jagatdev Talab, a man made water reservoir. Around Satna Khajuraho, Ramvan, Chitrakoot and world famous temple. There is a Maa Sharda in Maihar which is a sub division of Satna. There is a big hanuman statue near Ramvan 16 k.m. from Satna city on Rewa road.
