Halisahar (In Bengali: হালিশহর) is a city and a municipality under Bijpur/ Naihati police stations of Barrackpore subdivision. in North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority.

It was formerly known Kumarhata. It has an ideal blend of green with township. Wet land is still present here.

History

Halisahar is famous for Sadhak Ramprasad Sen, the saint,the great ' devotee, of Hindu Goddess "Kali". One can find many ashrams here, the famous Nigamananda Asram is at Halisahar. Sri Chaitannya Mahaprabhu's Guru Griha is situated near 'Chaitannya Doba'. Both Rani Rashmoni and Sadhak Ramprasad Sen were born here. There is a tourist spot - the "Ramprasad Vita" which was the cottage of Sadhak Ramprasad, where he was born. Halisahar is also known as a birthland of freedom fighter Bipin Bihari Ganguly.Malancha railway level crossing. And here is famous park by his name, Bipin Bihari Ganguly park, formerly known as Craig Park(By the name of Sir, Craig in the time of British Period.)

Demographics

As of 2001^[update] India census, Halisahar had a population of 124,479. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Halisahar has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 70%. In Halisahar, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.But malancha to Halisahar railway station route is very much bad. Within 30 years nothing to happen with this route.

But the road connecting the Malancha and the high road of kalyani expressway has been well modified by the government under the "pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna". The most unfortunate thing is that road connecting malancha to station has been touched for modifications but this policy later became cold and it is yet now bad.

Libraries of Halisahar

Near Bipin Bihari Ganguly park( also known as Craig park), there is the biggest library named after Sadhak Ramprasad Sen, Ramprasad Library. It consists many books and magazines, which basically helps student and young generation for their career, and it's a good leisure place for old people. There is also another library situated in Halisahar, near the bus-stoppage Banimandir. It's known as Banimandir Library. It's not a big library but consists many old and new books, and competitive magazines.

Healthcare

North 24 Parganas district including halisahar has been identified as one of the areas where ground water is affected by arsenic contamination. Halisahar meets its water supply from Ganga river which though purified but contains huge amounts of impurities. Halisahar has more private clinics than the public. The most renowned private clinic is the priya pharmacy which has facilities ranging from blood tests to ECGs. However, a public hospital is also located at Halisahar panchayat(rural section) called the Nanna Hospital. 24 hours emergency doctors are available . The Halisahar Municipality's endeavor to revive the heath infrastructure is however boring fruit of late. The Halisahar Municipal Diagnostic Centre, a charitable dispensary by the name of revered citizen and first Indian F.R.C.S Col. K.P. Gupta and the Abala Sundari Matri Sadan (Maternity) is adding some breathings to the once rickety government facilitated health infrastructure here. The Diagnostic Centre is having X-Ray, USG and ECG facilities now. The Dispensary is boasting of greater medicine facilities and good medical practitioners. There is an Operation Theater created along with the Maternity.

Schools in Halisahar

Halisahar has got a few reputed schools along with a recently established training college. Halisahar Jatia High School,Rabindra Vidya Mandir, Ram Prasad Vidyapith,Haisahar High School, Adarsha Vidyapith, Annapurna Valika Vidyalaya, Mallick Bag High School, Bauipara High School, Kona High School and Prasad Nagar High School along with Hazinagar Adarsh Hindi High School are serving students up to senior secondary classes in the language medium of Bengali and Hindi. These educational institutions provide a good facility of eduction but has little or better say—smaller sports ground. Rabindra Vidya Mandir is located in Purbachal along the purbachal colony main road situated just adjacent to saraswati club. There is a college Vasco-Da-gama College of Marine Radio Officer which is located in the rural area, Jethia Bazar locality near the railway station on the eastern side.

IT Education and awareness

IT education and awareness can be called good as schools in Halisahar has initiated the Computer course in Vocations. Many cyber cafes with high speed internet facilities have boosted up in the urban section of Halisahar. Home to home computer is also rising and total no. of internet connections (non-commercial) is also on rise.
