Sports
Chalatenango is home to a professional football team Alacranes del Norte (formerly known as Nejapa Fútbol Club). The club was relegated to segunda division of Salvadorean football and their home stadium is Estadio Gregorio Martinez. The stadium has some of the best facilities in El Salvador with floodlights and a main stand with seating accommodation.
Chalatenango was one of the oldest established clubs in El Salvador but the club suddenly went out of existence in 2009 when the club's board sold Chalatenango's place in the top division to Municipal Limeño. In October of 2009, after two months of the season, a club from Nejapa approached the mayor of Chalatenango to request permission to play their games in Chalatenango's stadium. Since then, Nejapa have tried to appeal to the people of Chalatenango by changing the club's name to Alacranes del Norte and wearing the purple and white colours of the city.
Nowadays,The team which is the major representative of sports in Chalatenango is BLACK SCORPIONS TEAM, this team is located in the city of Chalatenango since January 2009 and it is making a great work in contact sports such as, KICK BOXING AND MIXED MARTIAL ARTS. This is also a school, which is legally recognized by the Salvadorean Federation of Kick Boxing and Muay Thai ( Instituto Nacional de los Deportes INDES and World Assosiation of Kick Boxing Organization WAKO). One of the biggest achievements is to generate spaces for the youth of Chalatenango that they can develop their athletic abilities since it does not exist another cultural or sport institution that suggest or promote this kind of activities in the city. In its first year of activities, Black Scorpions acquired four Medals in the National Ranking for the city of Chalatenango. People who have marked a good example or inspiration for the hard work of this team are: the salvadorean Carlos "El Famoso" Hernandez who is a world champion of boxing, and the Salvadorean Carlos Betancourt who is a Latin American champion of Kick Boxing and Muay Thai. for further information visit social page: BLACK SCORPIONS MARTIAL ARTS
Another popular sport in the region is ranching or ´Jaripeo´. Events take place every few months in the villages around Chalatenango and in the field opposite the Gregorio Martinez outside of Chalatenango city.
